Dr. Taofikat Abosede Adesalu
Member, Academic Board

Dr. Taofikat Adesalu’s research focus is on algal ecology, taxonomy, systematics and biotechnology. She has her undergraduate degree in Botany, graduated from University of Lagos in 1995, Masters in Botany in 2000 from University of Lagos and a Ph.D. in Botany from University of Lagos in 2008.

Taofikat is keenly interested in applying her work on algae, to unravel the effects of climate change on aquatic ecosystems and to solve some of the nutritional problems as these organisms are rich in vitamins, secondary metabolites, lipids and anti-oxidants. Through her research, Taofikat has contributed to algal flora of Nigeria and Africa and her findings resulted in three new species, Paraphysomonas nigeriensisAcanthocystis nigeriensis (scale bearing protist) and Discotella oyannensis and first record of Spicaticribra from AfricaHer work also established the presence of poly-unsaturated fatty acids in some algal strains which has potential for food processing and other bio-based products. She has authored and co-authored 41 publications with manuscripts appearing in algology focused publications like Algological StudiesDiatom Research and Algal Research. She is a member of Botanical Society of Nigeria, General Secretary of United States Government Exchange Alumni Association (USGEAA), Organization for Women in Science for Developing World (OWSD) UNILAG Chapter, and Treasurer for Phycological Society of Nigeria (PSNG).
